Service Description

Hand-Building Pottery Course (Beginner Friendly) Hand-building is one of the easiest and most relaxed ways to begin working with clay. Using simple techniques and hand tools, you’ll learn how to shape pottery without a wheel, making it ideal for beginners. This course introduces a range of hand-building methods and surface techniques, helping you understand how different approaches suit different forms and functional pieces. You’ll be encouraged to explore, experiment, and apply what you learn at your own pace. Throughout the course, you’ll develop confidence with clay, discover the techniques you enjoy most, and gradually shape your own style in a calm and supportive studio environment. Once you’ve learned the basics of hand-building, you can enjoy working with clay anywhere — slowly, creatively, and intuitively. Weekly Curriculum Week 1 · Pinch-built bowl or mug Week 2 · Coiling techniques · Vase Week 3 · Slab building · Plate Week 4 · Combining techniques · Teapot Week 5 · Slab-built butter dish Week 6 · Underglaze painting Week 7 · Underglaze decoration Week 8 · Glazing Duration 8 weeks 2-hour session each week What’s Included • Firing for up to 7 pieces • Additional pieces can be fired for $5 per piece What’s Not Included • Clay is not included in the course fee • Clay can be purchased at the studio (5kg for $25) • Pieces are taken home between sessions and brought back for the next class What to Bring • Comfortable clothing and an apron • Short, trimmed nails • Optional reference images or sketches • Curiosity and a relaxed approach to making Important Notes • Pottery involves materials that require care • If you are pregnant or have health concerns, please let your tutor know so safe practices can be advised • Spaces are limited — bookings are non-refundable unless we are able to fill your spot
