Service Description

8-Week Beginner Basic Ceramic Course Are you curious about the wide variety of ceramic tableware and pottery artworks? Do you want to know how they are created? Do you have many ideas about pottery but don’t know how to start? Then this course is perfect for you! This basic course will open the door to the world of pottery, helping you build a foundational understanding of ceramic materials and pottery-making, while experiencing the charm of clay in a scientific and fun way. What You’ll Learn: Basic Theories: Fundamentals of ceramic making, clay and glazes Forming Methods: Throwing and trimming, pinching, coilling, slabbing Decoration Techniques: Texturing, embossing, engobe brushing, marbing, underglaze painting, glazing Others: Wedging Week 1 - Fundamentals of ceramic making & clay & glazes, Wedging, Throwing-centering Week 2 - Throwing (cylinders & cups) Week 3 - Trimming Week 4 - Pinching, coiling, engobe brushing Week 5 - Slabbing, texturing, embossing Week 6 - Marbling Week 7 - Underglaze painting Week 8 - Glazing About Tutor: Mido Yu, who has about 13 years of experience in ceramics making. The course will combine some of the techniques she has learned from studying and working in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. Enabling students to discover their own interests, directions and styles in clay. Duration: 8 weeks, 2-hour sessions each week. What’s Included: Firing for up to 7 pieces (The total length of the three sides of per piece up tp 30 cm, oversize piece will cost additional $1 per cm); Additional pieces can be fired for $10 each. What’s Not Included: Clay is not included in your class fee and can be purchased at class. You will need to take it home after each session and bring it back to class for the next session. What To Bring: A heart full of passion for clay. A notebook and a pen. An apron to avoid getting messy. Please wear comfortable clothing. Pictures or sketches as a reference so that the tutor can guide you to make your work better. A pair of hands with trimmed nails, as this will make you feel more comfortable when handling the clay. Important Notes: Pottery has many chemicals and materials that are hazardous – so if you are either pregnant or health impaired, you need to let your tutor knows so that she can advise you on best practices. Please note that because spaces are limited once you have booked there are no refunds unless we can find someone else to take your spot.
