Ceramics Overglaze Carving Workshop
June Special
Service Description
The overglaze carving technique involves applying overglaze enamel pigments onto a fired ceramic surface, then using carving tools to remove selected areas of the pigment to create specific patterns. The piece is then fired in a kiln at around 720°C, which permanently fuses the pigment onto the ceramic surface. This method allows for highly delicate lines and intricate details. You will create your artwork on a round ceramic plate approximately 13.5 cm in diameter, so please prepare a black-and-white paper design in this size. There are no restrictions on the subject matter. If you would like to create a realistic style piece (like the example works shown below), we recommend increasing the contrast between light and dark areas in your design, as this will greatly help with the carving process. The tutor will guide you through how to transfer your paper design onto the ceramic plate. If you need inspiration, we will also have a selection of reference designs available in studio. No prior pottery experience is required. What’s Included: Price is all inclusive of clay, overglaze, materials, glaze & firing. Each participant will create one pottery piece, ready for collection in 4 weeks. What To Bring: A black-and-white paper design approximately 13.5 cm in diameter. An appropriate particulate mask (P2/N95 recommended). An apron to avoid getting messy. HEALTH & SAFETY NOTICE This workshop may involve exposure to ceramic overglaze pigment powders and other art materials that can generate fine airborne particles during handling and clean-up. Some ceramic pigments may contain trace amounts of heavy metals and mineral compounds that may be harmful if inhaled or ingested over prolonged periods. Reasonable ventilation and studio safety procedures are implemented; however, participants acknowledge that minor dust exposure may still occur. Participants are advised to: • Wear an appropriate particulate mask (P2/N95 recommended) • Avoid touching the face while working • Wash hands thoroughly after the session This workshop may not be suitable for individuals with asthma, respiratory conditions, sensitivities to dust or mineral pigments, or those who are pregnant. Please note Finished pieces are intended for decorative display only and are not suitable for food contact.
