Glazing
Book to Glaze
Service Description
Book studio time to glaze your bisque-fired pieces using our shared studio glazes. Please book enough time to complete both your glazing and clean-up. If you have several pieces or would like a little more time, you’re very welcome to book two consecutive one-hour sessions. Glazing Guidelines To keep our shared glazes clean, protect our kiln shelves and maintain a safe and tidy studio, please follow these guidelines during every glazing session. Before & During Glazing Please handle our shared glazes carefully and avoid mixing or contaminating colours. When using dipping glazes, allow your piece to dry properly before dipping into another glaze. Introducing wet glaze into another bucket can contaminate the glaze and affect the colour for everyone. Please make sure brushes, tongs and other tools are clean before moving between different glazes. Stir dipping glazes gently and thoroughly before use, avoiding vigorous stirring or splashing. Please do not pour glaze from one bucket into another. Please don’t blow dust or dry glaze from your pieces, as this sends fine particles into the air. Use a clean, slightly damp sponge instead, and allow your piece to dry before glazing. Please do not use wax resist. Protecting Our Kiln Shelves The bottom of every piece must be completely clean and free from glaze before it goes onto the firing shelf. As a general guide, leave approximately 1 cm above the base glaze-free. Brush-on glazes can move and run more during firing, so please leave a more generous clean area around the bottom when needed. If you are layering glazes or trying a new combination, please apply conservatively. Some glaze combinations can become much more fluid when fired. If you’re unsure whether a glaze or combination is safe, please ask before glazing. Clean-Up Clean-up is part of your booked session, so please allow enough time at the end to leave the glazing area clean and ready for the next person. Wash all tongs, sponges and tools you have used. Thoroughly wipe down your entire glazing workspace, including the tables and benches where glaze buckets have been placed. Wipe up any glaze drips, rings or splashes, including any glaze on the outside of the buckets. Please always use a damp sponge or cloth when cleaning rather than brushing or wiping dry glaze dust, as this can send fine particles into the air. Mop the floor around your workspace, making sure any glaze or water spills are cleaned up before you leave.
